MediaHub Brussel: Smart Media Meetups and trainings 2018

SMART MEDIA MEETUP SEPTEMBER 2018: BATTLE OF THE PLATFORMS: WHO WILL WIN? 

Monday 24 September 2018, 10h00 to 13h00, at imec-SMIT, Pleinlaan 9, 1015 Brussels.

This Smart Media Meetup is all about platform markets and how to deal with them as a media professional. First, Prof. Karen Donders and Tom Evens will present insights from their latest book ‘Platform Power and Policy in Television Markets’ (Palgrave, 2018). Next, Matt Stoller from the U.S.-based Open Markets Institute will provide an international view on the rise and impact of global platforms and market concentration. In conclusion, Peter Quaghebeur, CEO of SBS, will share his views on the relevance of platform dynamics for media strategy.

TRAINING: FOUNDATIONS AND TRANSFORMATIONS OF MEDIA ECONOMICS

Three days of courses (each day 10h00-17h30) on wednesday 26, thursday 27 and friday 28 September 2018, VUB campus, Brussels.

Course content: For media and media-tech related professionals who wish to obtain an in-depth overview of the latest theoretical and applied economic frameworks on the economics of the media industry. What determines the industrial organisation of the media industry? What is the organisational behaviour of media firms? Which strategic management approaches are the most relevant for media executives and professionals?

Teaching staff: The lectures are given by a roster of nine national and international academics and industry professionals from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, University of Oxford, KULeuven, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Euractiv, Deloitte, Het Nieuwsblad/De Gentenaar, and Proximus.

TRAINING: MEDIA ECONOMICS AND POLICY IN A DIGITAL AGE

Two days of courses (each day 10h00-17h30) on wednesday 24 and thursday 25 October, VUB campus, Brussels.

Course content: For media and media-tech related professionals who wish to obtain an in-depth view on the interplay between media economics and policy in a converging media landscape. Digital convergence has blurred the boundaries between separate regulations for broadcasting, telecommunications and ICT. This training looks into new policy making and the new ways in which various policies (competition law, media regulation) are applicable to the media sector. How do European (Digital Single Market) and national policies and regulations shapes these media sectors, the competition policy and specific trends?

Teaching staff: The courses are given by a roster of seven national and international academics and industry professionals from Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Leiden university, Medialaan, Discovery Communications, European Publishers Council, LL.M EU Affairs consultancy, and Ofcom.
